Autumn Activities

Padstow’s charm can be truly apricated in Autumn. As the summer crowds dwindle, the town’s streets provide a unique cosiness as the weather cools and the days start to shorten. There are a wealth of opportunities to embrace golden autumn days with a variety of seasonal activities near to this picturesque historic town. So, whether you need some extra ideas for how to entertain the kids in the upcoming half-term break, or are just looking for something unique for an October afternoon, this guide will help you make the most of the autumnal magic that North Cornwall has to offer.

Screech Owl Sanctuary & Animal Park

If you’re searching for a fun and educational family outing that’s just a short drive from Padstow, the Screech Owl Sanctuary & Animal Park is an absolute must. Known for its incredible flying displays (which thanks to a large indoor barn can take place whatever the weather) you’ll have the chance to witness their majestic owls in flight.

But the owls aren’t the only stars at this attraction – there’s a wide range of animals too; from meerkats, to racoons, emus and more, making it the perfect day out for animal lovers of all ages. Fancy an animal encounter? There’s a great variety of animals, as well as the owls, that you can meet one-on-one. You can even have breakfast with them!

If you’re lucky enough to visit during half-term, you and your family can get into the spooky spirit with a Halloween trail! The kids can explore the park solving spooky clues while learning about its residents. Why not enjoy “Hal ‘owl’ een” at the sanctuary, as they’re hosting a pumpkin carving competition and a fancy-dress contest for both kids and adults on the 31st October, as well as free face painting, storytelling and themed talks. With even more reasons to visit this Autumn, why not head over to the Screech Owl Sanctuary & Animal Park during your stay in Padstow.

Lappa Valley

A visit to Lappa Valley is perfect for families with young children. Lappa Valley offers a unique combination of scenic train rides, indoor and outdoor play and nature filled activities that make it a hit for all ages. Hop aboard one of their charming steam or diesel trains and journey through beautiful landscapes to the heart of the park, where an array of exciting attractions awaits.

Why not take a boat out on their Boating Lake or take a stroll along woodland walks or their musical trial! Perhaps you prefer adventure golf or an exciting few hours in the indoor multi-level soft play area or perhaps most special of all more train rides!

Departing from Platform Three is their Lakeside railway, featuring their smallest train. This miniature delight takes you on a circular journey around the park, where you may encounter some of the wildlife that surrounds it. Their brand-new Platform Two Trebah Halt takes you on another exciting journey up the valley to Newlyn Downs, where there’s a family games field and picnic area.

This half-term why not try something extra special; their Fireworks Spectaculars. These events see the park’s historic 19th century Engine House brought alive by the Kernow Fireworks Company with a dazzling display! So, for train enthusiasts and young families alike, Lappa Valley is a great day out.

Dairyland Farm Park

Dairyland Farm Park is a fantastic family destination, where fun meets the countryside! There’s plenty to see and do, whether it’s meeting many adorable animals, jumping into the huge indoor play area, or enjoying tractor and pony rides. Extensive outdoor play areas including trampolines and an obstacle course mean there’s plenty for even the most energetic of youngsters. A personal favourite is the maise maze, a fantastic outdoor attraction which sees you winding through crops to find a tower and ring a bell!

However, something extra special comes with the spooky season, as at Halloween, Dairyland becomes Scaryland. An unforgettable seasonal event that promises family friendly chills and thrills that will stick with you long after your visit. Children can pick up a free pumpkin to carve on-site or take home and there’s a unique version of their tractor ride especially for Halloween with a spooky story told with fantastic flair by a guide! The creativity of the Scaryland decorations knows no bounds, particularly fun are giant goofy spiders made from hay bales!

I am sorry to say that this classic Cornwall attraction (loved by several generations of my own family) is closing down completely after November 3rd, so this will be the last time to enjoy this park and one of the most fun Halloween events in all of Cornwall. I urge you to visit while you still can!

Bodmin Jail

For an extremely spooky Halloween experience, a visit to Bodmin Jail is a must during this half-term! Steeped in dark history and eerie tales, this centuries-old former prison sets the perfect stage for a bone-chilling adventure. This landmark historical site showcases the darkly fascinating history of Georgian and Victorian crime and punishment with exhibits with impressive production values!

Over the spooky season, Bodmin Jail goes all out with its extensive Halloween events, offering a thrilling mix of haunted tours, immersive storytelling and spine-tingling experiences. There’s no shortage of frights and fun while you explore the depths of this jail and hear the ghostly tales of the past.

For families with older children this is a great choice, as there are events to suit a variety of ages, and even several adult events should you have time to yourselves over the holiday. Perhaps you’re interested in a ghost walk or you fancy yourself as a paranormal investigator, then this is the attraction for you. Those brave enough can even try ‘The Basement Challenge’ a terrifying new experience launched this year!

So, whether you’re a history buff or want a taste of the paranormal, there’s something for everyone at Bodmin Jail!

As the autumn season transforms Padstow and its surrounding areas into a picturesque landscape of vibrant colors and crisp coastal air, there’s no better time to explore all the activities this beautiful part of Cornwall has to offer. From scenic walks and wildlife encounters, to family-friendly Halloween events, autumn in and around Padstow is a season full of adventure and charm. Whether you’re looking for outdoor fun or cozy, memorable experiences, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during this magical time of year.
